What is Orencia?

Orencia (abatacept) is a prescription medication used to treat moderate-to-severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It may reduce signs and symptoms of RA and help prevent further damage to your bones and joints.

How does Orencia work?

Orencia is an engineered protein designed to block the inflammation-causing activity of T-cells, a type of immune cell. It does so by interrupting the activation of T-cells by another type of immune cell called an antigen-presenting cell (APC). Because rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease defined by damaging inflammation of joint tissue, Orencia helps treat the disease by decreasing immune system inflammation. It is administered by intravenous (IV) infusion in a doctor’s office.
